I can vividly remember the day I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was 42 and pregnant with my first child. I had a biopsy and an appointment was made for my partner and I to return in a couple of days for the results when we were  told the tumour was malignant. The world stood still and I couldn’t breathe, what was going to happen to my baby and how would I cope with chemotherapy.

I had a lumpectomy and lymph node removal operation once I was twelve weeks pregnant. My Surgeon recommended I terminate my pregnancy but luckily my Oncologist was much more positive. My chemotherapy treatments were tailored around my pregnancy, four courses before the birth and four after. At this point was told about the Hereford Breast Cancer Haven. I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to not only have a brilliant surgeon and oncologist but I would also benefit from the care and expertise of a wonderful charity which was unbelievably based not only in London but in Hereford, a rural county most people confuse with Hertfordshire!

Breast Cancer Haven arranged for me to see their nutritionist because my diet needed to be suitable for pregnancy and bone density. I also had reflexology to increase my energy levels. I coped remarkably well with the four chemo sessions I had before giving birth to my beautiful son, and the four I had afterwards. The Haven team were wonderful, they continued to support me throughout the following 17 radiotherapy treatments and during a further years treatment with Herceptin. Every time I walked through their front door my shoulders relaxed and I could feel the tension leave my body. The team were so friendly and nothing fazed them not even a small screaming baby. I always felt that I had somewhere to go when I was worried, somewhere that would understand how I was feeling and people I could talk to about anything.

As I got to grips with motherhood and my energy levels began to rise I joined the Hereford Haven’s fundraising committee. I felt so lucky having had their support that I wanted to give something back. Now five years later with my little boy getting ready to start school I have started my own business baking dairy, wheat and gluten free cupcakes and traybakes. The only downside I found to giving up dairy was missing out on my favourite food, cake. When I am out or visiting friends I have to sit and watch them tucking in to some gorgeous gooey little number but instead of moaning about it I decided to make my own. They were so successful I decided to try my hand at gluten and wheat free cakes, which are notoriously difficult to make well. According to family and friends these were so good they couldn’t tell they were dairy, wheat and gluten free, so I thought ‘why not share them with other people on restricted diets’ and Cake Angels was born.

Because I was so lucky to have the support of the Haven during my treatments I have decided that £1 of every order I receive will be donated to them with my heartfelt thanks.
