Frequently Asked Questions for Supporters

1. Where can I find information about breast cancer and the different treatments my partner / friend / family member may have?

Breast Cancer Haven has an up to date library as well as Internet access where you can access information at a time that suits you. We stock a variety of informative leaflets, books, videos and CDs as well has having a list of reliable and useful websites. We have information about local carer support groups and organisations, which may also be of interest.

2. Can you advise on the best way I can help my partner / friend / family member. I'm not sure what to do?

We can offer a variety of ideas on the best way to help, both practically and emotionally. This is discussed on the 'Supporters Workshop' as part of the Haven Introduction . We can help you to understand some of your reactions and needs at this difficult time. We also have a variety of booklets from Macmillan Cancer Relief and a Carers guide from the Cancer Lifeline Kit, which can also offer you suitable advice and information.

3. I'm finding it hard to come to terms with all the changes that are happening to us. Can you help?

Sometimes it helps to talk to somebody who is not family or a friend, who is impartial and can help you to understand the impact breast cancer may have on you and your relationship. One to one counselling can help with any worries or issues you may have and also encourages you to look at the best way of dealing with these and looking to the future. We also offer counselling to family members and close friends, who often experience the ups and downs of a loved one's treatment as well.
